What is Naturopathic medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a primary health care system that combines scientific knowledge and diagnostics with traditional and natural forms of medicine. A naturopathic doctor or naturopath (ND) provides alternative therapy services that are complementary to conventional medicine.
The naturopathic philosophy is to stimulate the healing power of the body and treat the underlying cause of disease, whether the condition is acute or chronic. An ND will focus on all areas of health (physiology, biochemistry, lifestyle factors, hormone health, nutrient status, inflammation, personal and family health history) to determine the cause of imbalance leading to your symptoms. Then using a variety of modalities including clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathic medicine, physical medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, and lifestyle counseling, she will access diverse disciplines to develop the most effective and individualized treatment approach.
Naturopathic medicine is a very large and diverse field, but there are a few tenets which every naturopathic doctor practices which you will experience at any naturopathic clinic.

What can Naturopathic medicine help with?
- Digestive Health
A healthy gut contains bacteria that bolsters immunity and helps to fight disease. Common conditions that can impact your digestive system include reflux, diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s and Colitis. Treatment with a Naturopathic Doctor usually begins with dietary and lifestyle counselling, adding nutritional supplements to your daily routine, considering botanical medicines and acupuncture to decrease your symptoms. If necessary, you may be referred for laboratory testing such as; food sensitivity testing and blood work.
- Stress, Burnout & Adrenal Fatigue
During stressful times our body has to work overtime to stay in balance. Often this puts a lot of pressure on our adrenal glands, and can impact our mood and sleep. A Naturopathic Doctor will assess your cortisol levels, the primary stress hormone in the body, take a detailed history of your sleep patterns, energy levels, mood symptoms, and current daily stressors. This information will enable the Naturopathic Doctor to devise a custom plan that helps your unique body be able to successfully adapt to the demands. The goal will be to help the body recover and adapt to stress, while maintaining balance. Treatment options include; nutritional supplementation, botanical medicines, and acupuncture.
- Decreasing Anxiety & Irritability
Anxiety disorders usually include irrational and involuntary thoughts and behaviours. Root causes can be genetic, environmental, biochemical or circumstantial. First line strategy used by a Naturopathic Doctor includes recommending nutritional supplements, botanical medicines and/or acupuncture. A detailed history of your diet, activity levels, sleep, and current life stressors will also be discussed so that a personalized treatment plan can be recommended. The doctor will also consider whether psychological counseling and psychotherapy could be helpful and make the appropriate referral.
- Depressive Disorders
Symptoms of a depressive disorder affect many aspects of one’s life. Naturopathic Medicine strives to provide a patient-centered treatment plan that mitigates the contributing factors. First line defensive includes optimizing overall nutrition, recommending appropriate lifestyle changes, and considering nutritional supplementation or botanical medicines. In addition, Naturopathic Doctors may utilize Traditional Chinese Medicine based Acupuncture to treat symptoms.
- Arthritis, migraines, headaches
Pain can be caused by both internal and external factors and a Naturopathic Doctor will look for the root cause of your pain. Different treatment options that may be trialled include manual adjustments, acupuncture, nutritional supplements, botanical medicines, and topical creams.
- Weight Management
Different factors are at play affecting one’s eating behaviours and body’s metabolism. A Naturopathic Doctor will look holistically at lifestyle choices, hormone levels, and co-occurring medical issues to devise a personalized weight management plan for their client. Your ND may also work collaboratively with a Nutritionist to advise you on recipes, menu plans and shopping lists.
- Cough, colds, immune system support
A Naturopathic Doctor can support acute illness through various homeopathic and botanical remedies. The goal is to support the immune system, enabling the body’s innate healing system to work at its best.
- Insomnia & Poor Sleep
Many factors can contribute to sleep issues. A Naturopathic Doctor might request lab tests to understand what’s happening in your body, and will investigate your sleep habits and current stressors. The goal will be to determine the root cause of the symptoms, whether that be hormonal, current life stressors, inflammatory or from digestive issues.

When Acupuncture is used, while laying comfortably several thin acupuncture needles will be placed along the meridian pathways that are believed to be blocked. The needles are left in place for 15-45 minutes and will help bring the body back into balance. Some people and areas of the body are more sensitive and with insertion, a slight prick may be felt, however, no pain is generally experienced.
Are there are any risks involved?
Some natural supplements and botanical medicines can interfere with prescription medications and a naturopathic doctor is best suited to determine what combinations are best and safe for you.
