About

What is IV Iron Infusion?

Iron is essential for making healthy red blood cells. When iron levels are too low, you can develop anaemia, leading to fatigue, shortness of breath, brain fog, and a reduced quality of life.

IV iron delivers iron directly into your bloodstream through a small vein in your arm. It's absorbed faster and more reliably than oral iron, which can cause stomach upset or take months to restore your levels.

Who Might Benefit From IV Iron

IV iron is often the right next step for patients who:

Have low iron or iron deficiency anaemia confirmed by bloodwork

Can't tolerate oral iron (constipation, nausea, stomach upset)

Haven't seen improvement on oral iron after months of trying

Have conditions affecting absorption — celiac, IBD, post-gastric-bypass

Need iron replenished quickly — before surgery, during pregnancy, or for severe anaemia

FAQ

Common Questions

How quickly will I feel better?+

Some people notice improvement in energy within a week, but full benefits often take 4–6 weeks as your body produces new red blood cells.

Will I still need to take oral iron?+

It depends on your condition. Some patients transition to oral iron for maintenance; others may need periodic IV treatments.

How many infusions will I need?+

Most patients need only one infusion. Some require a short series depending on iron stores and underlying condition. Your NP will guide this based on follow-up bloodwork.

Is IV iron covered by OHIP?+

No. IV iron infusion is a private-pay service. The prescription iron may be partially or fully covered by private drug plans.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?+

Not necessarily. You can book a Virtual Nurse Practitioner consultation directly with us. If your doctor is referring you, they can submit the delegation form below.
