Atara Black, RSW MSW

I chose this work because I'm drawn to real conversations about real life. Not clinical jargon, not textbook answers — just honest, human connection. Most of the women I work with come in dealing with relationship issues. They're professionals in their mid-20s who feel stuck, unfulfilled, or like they've outgrown the relationship they're in but are too scared to leave. The core of almost every conversation I have is loneliness. Why am I not feeling fulfilled? Something is wrong, something is empty. These aren't dramatic crises — they're the daily grind that wears people down. Regular working people dealing with regular overwhelm, not crazy disorders. Clients often come in because something specific happened — a fight, a move-out, something too overwhelming to sit with alone. But once we start unpacking, there's usually a lot more underneath. Patterns of codependency. Fear of being alone. Settling for less because the alternative feels worse. My style is conversational. I let go of rigid structure and let you be in the driver's seat. I look for root causes — who are you truly at your core? That comes out naturally through conversation, not through worksheets or homework. What I wish people knew before starting therapy is how comfortable it can be. How easy and accessible. You can just sit on a couch with another person who listens without objection. People come in saying the most normal things but think they're the anomaly. They think their problems aren't big enough for therapy. They are. After working together, your life might not look different on the outside — but the way you relate to it will be. There's a certain calmness, a gentleness. More self-awareness. The relationship to everything in your life just gets lighter.
